TWO osprey chicks have hatched in a picturesque Welsh valley for the first time in more than 400 years, wildlife watchers have confirmed
The Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust have announced that the Dyfi ospreys near Machynlleth, sired their first chick at 3.35pm yesterday and a second chick hatched at 6.35am on Monday.
Dyfi Osprey Project manager, Emyr Evans said: “This is a wondrous event for us and for the ospreys.
“It was in 1604 that ospreys were last recorded breeding on the Dyfi and now we are witnessing history in the making.
“It’s incredible to think that the last time an osprey chick hatched in the Dyfi estuary, James I had just succeeded Elizabeth I to the throne.
“The osprey is Wales’ rarest bird of prey and today we are delighted to be able to say that Wales has two breeding pairs.
“I’m absolutely delighted about ospreys breeding on the Dyfi once again.
“We run our project as a community initiative and the look on the volunteers’ and visitors’ faces when they witnessed that first tiny chick popping out of its shell was priceless.
“It’s amazing how wildlife can have such a positive effect on people.
“I’ve seen grown men cry today.
“I’m so pleased for local people and communities that have put so much into the Dyfi Osprey Project over the last three years, this is the perfect reward for their hard work.”
He said more than 60 volunteers donate their time to the Dyfi Osprey Project and over 15,000 people have visited this year so far.
The male osprey, called Monty, mated this year for the first time with a female born in Leicester’s wildlife reserve.
“After a gap of many centuries, ospreys were also in Montgomeryshire in 2004 and the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust believe that the Dyfi male osprey called Monty, might well be the single offspring that this pair had in that year,” said Mr Evans.
“But the pair failed to return the following year.
“Monty the male osprey had gone two years without attracting a female in time to breed but this year he has been successful.
“He returned from his African wintering grounds on April 6 and three days later, he had attracted a female.
“This new osprey had been ringed as a chick so we know exactly where she is from just by focusing the nest cameras on her ring and reading the numbers off it; it is a white ring with the digits 03.
“She was born at another Wildlife Trust reserve, Leicester and Rutland Wildlife Trust in 2008 and her father is a 1997 born bird who is still breeding at Rutland Water and has fathered 23 chicks to date.”
After centuries of persecution, ospreys had become completely extinct in the UK by the early 20th century.
A pair re-colonised at Loch Garten near Aviemore in the 1950s and the population in Scotland is now recovering; in England however there are only three osprey breeding sites.
The first Glaslyn Osprey chick hatched near Porthmadog on May 9.

Bird Sightings: Citrine wagtails in Wales

CITRINE wagtails are rare visitors to Britain, and even rarer in Wales, with just three previous records, including one at RSPB Conwy in 2008.
Usually breeding in western Russia, the male has a striking, lemon-yellow head and front.
Remarkably, RSPB Conwy hosted another earlier this week, with one feeding busily on the muddy edges of the lagoon.
Another sighting was made at Cemlyn, Anglesey, on Tuesday.
Several other scarce birds were at Conwy this week, including the second wood sandpiper of the spring and a smart snow goose that stayed for just a day, though many will suspect its origins are not wild.
Visitors watching the spectacular nesting seabirds and tumbling choughs at RSPB South Stack last week had the rare opportunity to hear a corncrake calling in the long grass, though seeing it proved a challenge.
Corncrakes declined dramatically in the 20th century as farming changed, but they have been recovering in western Scotland thanks to crofters and conservation groups.
There are now more than 1,200 singing males there, though they have nested only rarely in Wales since the 1960s.
“Rare” is, of course, a relative term. While coots are common on lakes and even ponds across North Wales, when one turned up on Bardsey Island last week, Observatory staff had to raid the archives to find the last record.
It was in 1969, and this week’s bird proved to be only the sixth ever to make the sea crossing.
Across the Dee Estuary, a broad-billed sandpiper was a great find among an impressive flock of 10,000 dunlins at Hoylake and Meols, a Russian wader that is rare on western coasts and even rarer in spring.
More locally, a great northern diver and Manx shearwaters were off the Great Orme, while a hobby and a green woodpecker were in Pentraeth forest.

The birds and butterflies you see – or don’t see – on a country walk can tell you a lot about the state of the environment

As summer approaches many of us will be heading out into the countryside to enjoy the wildlife and landscapes of rural Wales.
But how aware are we, as we walk across a peat upland or linger in a wooded valley, of how much the wildlife around us can tell us about the health of our environment.
For many people birds are the most easily observed living things around us. RSPB Cymru publishes an annual report, called the State of Birds in Wales, which presents a survey of the health of bird populations across the country


It will be no surprise to learn that many bird species have recorded severe population declines in recent years. The RSPB described the fall in numbers among some farmland and woodland birds as “huge”, adding that “several species soon will, or have already halved in abundance since the Wild Bird Indicator started in 1994.”
Among those that have registered particularly large declines are such familiar species as starlings, which have decreased by 58%, yellowhammer (40%) and curlew (46%).
The golden plover once numbered several hundred pairs in Wales in the 1970s, and was an iconic sight in upland and wetland habitats across the country.

But its population had crashed to just 36 pairs by 2007, and according to the report it must now be considered a rare-breeder.
Other birds, once common in farmland, have declined so much that they no longer breed every year in Wales. The corn bunting and turtle dove are two examples of previously familiar birds that are now rarely seen – or heard.
The State of Birds in Wales report is the result of a partnership between RSPB Cymru, the Welsh Ornithological Society, the Countryside Council for Wales, the British Trust for Ornithology and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and is the most comprehensive survey of bird populations across Wales.
It also shows the success of efforts to conserve rare species and their habitats.
These have seen some spectacular successes. The stonechat, a bird that is related to the thrushes, has seen its numbers rise by 168% between 1995 and 2008.
The great spotted woodpecker, which has become a familiar visitor to many gardens, has increased by159%.
Some particularly rare birds have grown in number in recent years, often benefiting from sites protected and owned by RSPB Cymru, the CCW and other conservation bodies.
The avocet bred for the first time in Wales at Newport Wetlands in 2003 and is now up to five pairs, looking set to spread to more sites.
The bearded tit is breeding at two sites and the little egret, which first bred here in 1996, has spread to sites all over the country.
Overall, the numbers of birds on farmed habitats and lowland farmland are 14% lower than when the population indicators began in 1994, although woodland bird populations have remained stable.
In their introduction to the report the authors said that the Assembly Government had missed their target of halting the loss of biodiversity by 2010 “by a mile.”
Broadcaster and conservationist Iolo Williams said: “If governments don’t take this seriously, we will have large numbers of extinct bird species. I don’t know when, but it will happen – and Wales will be poorer for it.”
He added: “Birds are a natural environmental indicator. If there is something seriously wrong with the bird population, we’re in trouble.
“It will affect plants and insects, and in the end it will affect us – it is really the time to worry.”
Ian Johnstone, senior conservation scientist for RSPB Cymru, said the picture was “not only one of doom and gloom”.
“Work is being done to improve the future for many bird species. It is particularly encouraging to see increasing numbers of some rare breeding birds such as avocet and bearded tit on our nature reserves where the conditions they need can be provided,” he said.
Dr Sian Whitehead, senior ornithologist for the Countryside Council for Wales, added: “Breeding avocets almost became extinct in the UK in the 1900s, however they bred for the first time in Wales in 2003 at the Newport Wetlands National Nature Reserve and we hope, through continued management work at the site, that these birds will continue to do well.”
Second only to birds for the ease with which they can be seen on a country walk are butterflies, and to a lesser extent moths.
According to Butterfly Conservation Wales, two thirds of Welsh butterflies and more than 69 species of previously common moths have declined significantly in the last 20-30 years.

“Because they have annual lifecycles, butterflies and moths are good indicators of environmental change – both climate change and changes to ecosystems,” said Russel Hobson, head of conservation at Butterfly Conservation Wales.
“We have good information on how butterfly populations are performing each year from butterfly transects around Wales,” he added.
Transects are counts of butterflies done by volunteers in a fixed place each week from April to September.
“Butterfly and moths have declined because the countryside has less diverse habitats and management, with fewer wildflowers,” Mr Hobson said.
The good news, though, is that Wales is still a UK stronghold for some species, such as the small pearl-bordered fritillary and the Welsh clearwing moth.
The pearl-bordered fritillary is a particular success story, having been brought back from the brink of extinction in Wales.
It is now thriving on its last nine sites in Wales thanks to the efforts of a number of conservation organisations.
On Butterfly Conservation’s Eyarth Rocks reserve in Denbighshire the butterfly is once again seen in good numbers every year and spreading on to adjoining land, according to Mr Hobson.
“But success is fragile and could still be lost as funding cuts bite,” he said.
Understanding why bird and insect populations have declined, and why the countryside is under stress, could be helped by a project under way at the National Botanic Garden Wales.
The new project, claimed to be one of the first of its kind in the world, will see the National Botanic Garden cataloguing all our 1,143 species of native flowering plants based on each plant’s unique gene sequence.
It means tiny pollen grains which will identify specific plants will help track where pollinators, like bees, have been.
Once reference barcodes are in place, unknown DNA sequences can be compared in order to find out what plants they are. It means plant species in Wales will be identifiable from the tiniest fragment of leaf, seed or pollen grain.
Dr Natasha de Vere, from the Garden, is leading the study along with Dr Tim Rich from the National Museum of Wales and Professor Mike Wilkinson from Aberystwyth University.
“We aim to be one of the first nations to DNA barcode all of their flowering plant species and to use our barcodes for biodiversity conservation and to improve peoples’ lives,” Dr de Vere said.
She added that there are many potential applications of DNA barcoding for plants, including finding out why bees are endangered.
The team is taking on the substantial task of collecting samples from every species of Welsh flora. For each species, they need to have multiple specimens barcoded. This allows errors to be spotted and picks up any variation within species.
Using a combination of freshly picked plants and dried specimens housed in the National Museum Wales collections, they have gathered examples of all of Wales’ floral heritage.
By comparing the DNA barcodes of modern day plants with specimens from the Natural History Museum of Wales, the team will be able to determine if plants are losing their genetic variation.
The results of the Barcode Wales project are due to be published this summer. The findings will be used to establish tailored conservation programmes.
Most of the Welsh countryside is farmland, and how that is managed is fundamental to the health of our environment and our wildlife populations.
Changes to the Glastir land management scheme proposed by the Assembly Government this spring were criticised by conservationists and farmers.
Arfon Williams of RSPB Cymru, the sole environmentalist on the scheme’s review group, said he had walked out in protest at the environmentally damaging recommendations being suggested.
Mr Williams, who produced a minority report on behalf of Wales Environmental Link, which represents 32 groups, said he was pleased the rural affairs minister had rejected some of the recommendations.
NFU Cymru President Ed Bailey said: “Good farming and good conservation can go together on the same farm, they are complementary and not contradictory.
“We must also remember that the scheme is not just about biodiversity gains but also carbon capture and improvements to water quality and landscape.”
The changes announced by then rural affairs minister Elin Jones included reducing the width of hedges from three to two metres, a mini-Glastir option, complete re-costing of work, full access to the capital grant scheme and retention of maintenance options.
Wales Environment Link said environmental groups strongly support Glastir, but some of the review group’s recommendations could reduce its ability to deliver for the environment and help declining species like the yellowhammer, brown hare and small pearl-bordered fritillary.
Mr Williams said: “It is vitally important that we have a scheme that is popular with farmers and that fully rewards them for delivering a range of environmental benefits on behalf of wider society. These include water management, carbon sequestration and protecting and restoring our threatened and vulnerable wildlife.”
Mr Williams said RSPB Cymru welcomed many of the recommendations, but was disappointed at the option to reduce protective fencing for hedgerows from 3m to 2m. He said wider hedges were significantly more beneficial for biodiversity and support a variety of vulnerable wildlife including many declining farmland bird species.
“RSPB Cymru remains a strong supporter of Glastir and continues to believe that the scheme, through the targeted expenditure of public money, has the potential to deliver significant environmental benefits for all of Welsh society.
“But before the accepted recommendations are included, there must be a clear demonstration of the contribution to Glastir’s stated objectives, including contributing to the Welsh Assembly Government’s legal duty to halt biodiversity decline.”

Reptile News: Endangered South African gecko found in Flintshire, Wales

A RARE reptile has hitched a ride to Flintshire in a delivery of stone from South Africa.
The endangered rock gecko was discovered by a shocked family in Hawarden, who had ordered a batch of a special type of stone for building works at their house.
They took the tiny creature to their local vet and it is now being cared for at Flintshire Wildlife and Pet Rescue in Greenfield.
Rescue centre owner Elfyn Pierce-Jones said the lizard was so rare he had to notify Defra, the national government department for environment, food and rural affairs.
He told the Daily Post: “We were called to come and collect the lizard from the vet and we had no idea what it was at first.
“It was freezing cold and dying, so it had turned black and we had to put it on a heatpad straight away.
“We were told it was probably a British newt, but have since discovered it is actually a very endangered South African species which should not even be in this country.
“It seems to have come over in the consignment of special stone and the family found it when they started moving it.
“They took it for granted that it was a British species.”
Elfyn suffered a nasty bite from the six-inch long creature when he tried to transfer it from the heatpad into a special vivarium.
He added: “It only has very small teeth, but they are sharp enough to puncture the skin.
“Thankfully it didn’t do any real harm, but it did latch on to my finger.
“I have informed Defra and have been told it has to stay here indefinitely, because it cannot be re-homed as an endangered species.
“I have no idea how it even survived the journey, because it would have come over by ship.
“It was in a bad way when we took it in, but after spending some time on the heatpad and eating some food it was totally fine.”
There are hundreds of species of gecko worldwide, but only nine different types of African gecko.
Rock geckos often prefer to live in damp cave entrances or rocky outcrops, but have also been found in tree trunks near to rocks.
They are largely nocturnal and have round pupils and slender, clawed toes.
Unlike many other species of gecko, they lack adhesive pads on their feet, which enable other types of lizard to climb walls and other vertical surfaces more easily.

Bird News: Exotic Birds in Wales

They’re normally spotted in the more exotic climes of Africa, South America and the Mediterranean. But changing global climates are bringing some unusual avian visitors to Wales, as Sion Morgan reports
From the African plains to the mountains of the Himalayas, from the wilderness of Alaska to the South American jungle, it seems the world’s most exotic birds are increasingly visiting our Welsh shores.
A number of exotic species are now appearing in our gardens and could soon change the landscape of the countryside forever.

Bird watching is changing and the scale of rare, colourful and plain alien species in Wales has been revealed by the Welsh Ornithological Society (WOS).
According to their records, in the past 12 months African bee-eaters and purple herons have been seen in Anglesey, North American great white egrets in parts of the former Gwent and a stunning South American bobolink in St Davids, Pembrokeshire.
The RSPB says that the growing trend has been partly caused by the deep winter freeze across northern Europe and Russia, which drove many exotic and unusual birds into Britain’s back gardens, combined with the fact that the warm springs of the last couple of years have seen migrating Mediterranean birds being attracted further north than usual.
Daniel Jenkins-Jones, head of public affairs at RSPB Cymru, said: “With the warmer climate there has certainly been an increase in numbers of little egret, Dartford warbler, and Cetti’s warbler across the UK.
“With temperatures warming up, soon we could very well see more exotic visitors, such as the purple heron, grace the Welsh shores.”
So far this year, twitchers have been lucky enough to see a North American lesser scaup duck in Cardiff Bay. The birds typically migrate south, as far as the West Indies and Bermuda.
In Little Haven, Pembrokeshire, two months ago, an ivory gull which breeds high in the Arctic was spotted by twitchers.
A Siberian chiffchaff which usually winters in the Himalayas turned up in Sudbrook, Monmouthshire, during January.
And a month later, a great white egret, typically found in the South American rainforests, was seen in the same county.
Richard Dobbins, from Pembrokeshire Birds, said: “We see rare migrants particularly when the weather is warm at this time of year, as migrating Mediterranean birds drift further north than usual because of the rising temperatures.
“The trend depends on the weather, but certainly if we see more warm springs we will see more rare migrants.”
He added: “As far as the winter goes, it isn’t so much cold temperatures that cause birds to wander further from their natural habitat, it’s the conditions.
“Large winds can blow birds off course and into unfamiliar territories. Of course what we also see is British birds being spotted in warmer parts of Europe because of the freezing temperatures here.”
Other notable recorded sightings include the stunning purple heron, which breeds in Africa and Asia, turning up in Dwyran on Anglesey, and a black kite, common in tropical parts of Australasia, flying over Marloes Mere in Pembrokeshire.
A glossy ibis which loves warmer regions like the Caribbean was also seen at Dunraven Bay in the Vale of Glamorgan in recent months.
Scientists have previously stated that with temperatures set to rise even further in years to come because of global warming, new species from France and central Europe will migrate to the UK, putting native birds under strain as they compete for food sources.
Those species expected to come across the channel in the next few decades include the hoopoe and bee-eater, colourful birds currently only found in southern Europe, Africa and parts of Asia.
Grahame Madge, an RSPB conservation spokesman, said: "Wales is known for its birdlife, especially its magnificent seabirds, such as colonies of puffins and kittiwakes. We are fearful that these birds are predicted to decline as Britain warms. Climate scientists suggest that Britain may become home to new colonists, such as the hoopoe and bee-eater. But whether these birds can find a home in Britain remains to be seen.
"We recognise that climate change will have a huge impact on the natural world and while some species will benefit, many others will lose out. We could face a future where the bird populations of Wales could change enormously. The excitement of new visitors won’t compensate for the loss of traditionally Welsh birds."
